Statement by Bruce Rader

FiremenAs our nation and our community continues to heal, our dedication to volunteerism is more important than ever. Nothing can change the fact that thousands of lives have been ended by these evil, despicable acts of terror. But we must continue to come together as a nation and help our neighbors as they help the survivors and families of the victims.

United Way of South Hampton Roads has established a local relief fund. Contributions may be made through workplace United Way campaigns by designating the "Attack on America Relief Fund" on pledge cards or online at www.unitedwayshr.org.

Two local Salvation Army Disaster Teams have been sent to the Pentagon to help feed volunteers. Catholic Charities of Hampton Roads will forward funds to New York Catholic Charities. Thousands of our citizens are donating money and much needed blood to the American Red Cross.

The Washington Redskins are sponsoring the Redskins Relief Fund to provide aid to the families of victims injured and killed at the Pentagon.

As our neighbors here in Hampton Roads respond to the call for search and rescue, many more will be called upon in law enforcement and military venues to find those responsible and bring them to justice. And while they perform their service, we must do our part. We must pray for all of those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. As President Bush proclaimed, This is a time when all Americans from every walk of life must unite in our resolve for justice and peace.

America has stood down enemies before, and will do so this time. None of us will ever forget this week, but we will go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in the world.
